What is an “Impulse Purchase”? PDF Print E-mail

An impulse purchase is “an unplanned or otherwise spontaneous purchase.” Marketers and retailers tend to exploit these “impulses”, which are tied to the need for instant gratification. A recent study demonstrated that many online auction and payment services have produced a generation of impulse buyers. The right price point coupled with the ease with which many online sellers are now offering their products, has indeed created a market place that is ripe for the picking.

Finding the “right” type of merchandise for impulse buyers can be difficult. One way to overcome this is to think about what types of items will trigger a desire in your customers. Studies have demonstrated that items that have a retail of $20.00 or lower and that are considered functional, decorative or gift related, often appeal to Impulse Buyers.

When it comes to Liquidation, there are not many choices available that meet these criteria. The ideal load would be one that had a variety of gift related and home décor items on it, at a price point far below wholesale.

American Merchandise Liquidators, Inc. has studied this concept in great detail. We have sought out and have secured a contract with a company that exceeds our expectations. This company has been recognized as one of the fastest growing and most highly successful giftware catalog companies in America! Unlike many of the “salvage loads” in the industry, every item on these truckloads are carefully scrutinized, and only the items that are deemed “fit for stock” are included in them.

Every item on the load has a Retail Value of $19.99 or under, and the percentage of damage or throwaway is extremely small! That’s a very important factor to consider, especially if you are selling online. Another very important factor is price. Successful online and off-price retailers are the ones that are able to purchase not just the “right product”, but secure it at the “right price point”. What makes the impulse buyer move from “consideration” to “action” is overall value.
